Il successo lo ha raggiunto nel 2001 con la commedia ‘Out Cold’ firmata assieme al fratello Brendan (sono noti infatti anche come The Malloys). Dal allora Emmett Malloy ha diretto - tra le varie cose - anche video per Metallica, Oasis, Blink 182, Wolfmother e Ben Harper - oltre al recente documentario sui White Stripes “Under The Great White Northern Lights”. Ora il regista ha annunciato di voler realizzare un film sulla vita dell’indimenticato Nick Drake . Ma non solo perchè Malloy curerà anche l’uscita di un libro e di un album dedicati. Molti artisti hanno già aderito al progetto (Jack Johnson, Andrew Bird, Matt Costa) mentre la sorella dell’artista scomparso nel 1974 (l’attrice Gabrielle Drake ) ha ufficialmente avallato l’operazione. “Tribute projects, they’re a dime a dozen. I’m sure there’s been 50 attempts at this, from every angle. It’s so complicated to get them started and to let people know it’s the real one… I’m just fighting my way through to get the artists I feel will do it justice. I’m excited to get going on it [because] there’s so many great songs” . Nel 2000 era uscito invece il documentario “A Skin Too Few-The Days Of Nick Drake”.
